Intelligent Maintenance Conference 2021

Recently, machine learning offered innovative solutions in predictive maintenance applications. A close interaction and exchange between industry and academia is crucial to accelerate progress in this field.

by Sandra Jennifer Schmid

On the 7th and 8th of September, the chair of Intelligence Maintenance Systems organized the fifth edition of the Intelligent Maintenance Conference to facilitate this exchange.

Similarly as last year, due to the uncertainty linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, we opted for an online conference. Since some restrictions have been lifted this summer, several speakers were able to come onsite to present their work.

Our conference has been increasingly becoming more diverse in terms of application domains but also in terms of the challenges tackled and methods applied. It has also been becoming more international; we had the opportunity to have renowned speakers / panelists from Europe, Canada, USA and even New Zealand.
Because the panelists on this year’s panel discussion were located all around the world (Dr. Daniel Nikovski at US East Coast, Dr. Patrick Bangert at US West Coast, Prof. Albert Bifet in New Zealand and Dr. Sandro Saitta in Switzerland), we opted to split the panel session in two parts this year. This allowed us to foster even more fruitful exchanges between experts in the field and to have a more detailed picture of the unsolved problems and future directions in intelligent operation and maintenance

The conference was spread over two days (without any of the sessions running in parallel), allowing the participants to attend all presentations they were interested in. Each of the sessions was concluded with a short panel discussion among all the presenters fostering broader discussions with different perspectives.

To facilitate the exchange between participants and to replicate a bit the “feeling” of coffee break interactions at live conferences, the Wonder platform was used as a new interactive element. By allowing the participants to move around in a virtual space, it enabled a more natural way of networking, similar to an on-site event.

Overall, the broad international attendance, the numerous positive feedbacks and the quality of the exchanges confirmed the interest for the event in the community and are strong motivators to overcome the challenges met when organizing such large events in these uncertain times.

The organization team acknowledges all the presenters and the session chairs for the quality of their contributions and for the efforts to adapt to this new format, as well as the sponsors for their support and trust in making the Intelligent Maintenance Conference 2021 possible!

We hope to see you all again next year!
